Empathy + Leadership

“Empathy is being concerned about the human being, not just their output.” – Simon Sinek
I remember how, when, and why I decided to make empathy a regular part of my leadership journey. It was over a decade ago and I was working under a leader who was firmly rooted in a command-and-control style of leadership.
We were taught to leave our emotions and perspectives at the door when we walked into the office. If we left those parts of ourselves at home, even better. For a long time, I was just fine with this culture. I didn’t necessarily need or want to explore my emotions any way. Head down, get stuff done.
And then I hit a major medical crisis which kept me away from work for several weeks. Instead of hearing caring messages of concern I heard “when are you coming back to work?” It was then that I knew I needed and wanted something different for myself. I wanted to be recognized as a whole person – not just a worker. And I wanted to lead others in the same way.
“Empathy” may not have been the word I associated with what I needed…I didn’t even really understand that word until starting to work with Brené Brown in 2019. A whole new world then opened up for me including ways of being that I craved in myself and those around me.
After years of trainings and countless failed attempts, I can say now that empathy is one of the first tools I pick up when I am working with someone. It still takes a lot of work to keep that mindset front-and-center, but I find the outcomes to be well worth the effort.
This month, we explore Leading with Empathy in our tool box which includes an approachable framework for anyone exploring empathy. If you need an extra hand, I am always here to help.
Be well + lead well,
